- - INVESTITURE 2008 SPEECH (Reprise) - -
INVESTITURE 2008 SPEECH (Reprise)Dear All,
- Thank you for being present for the Band Investiture.
- The band has come a long way since my first day with the band in 2005. To date, there have been a lot of changes and I am pretty sure that those who were here through the years would agree with me that the band has grown a lot, in terms of membership size, team spirit and commitment.
- I am very pleased to know that MOST of you present here do have a bit of memory with this band that you will, in time to come, treasure and look back upon, that will put a smile on your face.
- The outings we’ve had, the band camps, the performances, the laughter and joy, the sacrifices and hardships, the usual practices, the unusual events, the study groups, the dinners; this list goes on. We’ve all been through a lot. We’ve all been through a lot, and I believe most of you have nurtured a sense of belonging towards the band.
- This could not have not been possible without EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU. The teachers in charge, Mr Eugene Lim, Mr Caleb Yee, all your dedicated Alumni, Rebecca, Fadhil, Desmond, John, just to name a few, your instructors, and most importantly, all of you, band members, have contributed so much, in your different ways, to make this band, one of a kind, uniquely yours.
- All of us have done our part in our own roles, and many have gone beyond what is required to do more for this band simply because we regard ourselves as one big family.
- Mr. Lim and Mr. Yee have never had complaints coming back to accompany the band during your band practices and camps. They have sacrificed a lot of their time with their families and friends to be with everyone of us, even on school holidays and weekends.
- They have also been doing a lot behind the scenes to plan for outings, performances, hunt for workshops or events and keep a look out for benefits that will allow each and every one of you become a better musician, and have a chance to build a stronger friendship with one another.
- Your Alumni, instructors and myself have all been working closely with each of you, ensuring that you have a happy and safe environment to spend your teenhood in, and to engage in healthy yet fun activities with a relatively healthy social group. Not forgetting the extra events that we catered for all of you, particularly hosting study groups during the stand-down periods, and even providing extra tutoring outside school.
- You all have also made things possible by being very cooperative with activities organized and being RATHER diligent during practices.
- This is a young band. But this is also a growing band. Many young bands end up dying out or closing down because majority of the band members give up on themselves even before trying. You would all have known by now, that making music isn’t easy. But it is not impossible either. All we need is to be hardworking and really cooperative with one another, to do our part, and be able to do more.
- Our band will not die, not as long as we are here, fighting side by side together to make ourselves stronger than before, becoming better day by day. Yes, we have lost a few members along the way who were not strong enough to fight on together; some of them have, sadly, mixed with bad company. But I believe you and I have all tried to speak to them and encouraged them to return to our family. I sincerely appreciate those who have really done their part in encouraging one another to push on together. Thank you. The only thing we can do now is to stick together with what is left of us, encouraging one another and making sure that we can all stay together till the end.
- All these time, a group of members have been assisting the teachers and myself to ensure that the band practices, performances and activities have been carried out as smoothly as possible. Today, I will officially announce the appointment holders for the band for the work year of 2008/2009 and introduce them to those who have yet known of their existence.
- Let me remind all members that these people are responsible for the successful operation of the band within the work year. I demand every single one of you to cooperate fully with their instructions and assist them completely in bringing this band to a greater height.
- I will also like to remind all appointment holders that you are representatives of the band, and being a good role model to your fellow band members is very important.
- You are to make the right decisions to do the best things for the greater good of the band, and you are also reminded not to abuse your authority.
- Seek the best solution to all the problems that you will face and EARN the respect that you deserve.
- Work well with one another within the Committee and Section Leaders and give your professional cooperation to one another.
- Be just and equal to everyone. Do not mix personal issues with band matters.
- Tolerance and Patience are good virtues that you should adopt.
- Do the best of what is given to you. That will probably do you more good than to keep thinking of what you could have done if you were someone else.
- In times of doubt, seek help. Never be afraid to ask for help, sincerely. More often than not, you will get more help than you need.
- Show gratitude. Be thankful to those who have helped you and to those who have criticized you. Because it is those who care, that bothers to point out your flaws and make you better.
- Have confidence in what you do, because a group of people will depend on you. Never let obstacles get in your way. Stop and think. There’s always a way around every problem and crying and whining is definitely not on the list.
- Never give up when you are faced with challenges; keep on trying, and one day, you will be able to overcome them. On top of that, you will have gained a lot of experience and become stronger than you thought you could be.
- Love and care for this band, as much as you would love and care for your family and friends. Because everyone else here will be there for you in times of trouble.
- Be Righteous. Do not stir rumours or create trouble. Think before you speak or act.
- Open your minds to suggestions and be alert to situations. You will do just fine if you stick close to the right moral values.
- United, We Stand. Divided, We Fall. All of us wish to be respected. So let’s all work together and EARN the respect that we all deserve.
- We will not bring out the greatness as a band, if we do not forsake the greatness as an individual.
- Let us use our actions and teamwork to amaze everyone, including ourselves.
- Let us show everyone that we have pride in what we do, and we can achieve all that we aim for in life, as long as we all dare to try hard enough.
- We have moved so far from where we all started. Let’s not waste the first steps we all took. Let us move on together as One, hand in hand, heart to heart, reaching out to others when they fall, standing up again and moving forward.
- I, together with your teachers, instructors and alumni, can bring you all to where you want to be, but we cannot make you walk to the destination.
- Only you can move your legs, and encourage as many along the way. The band will not be complete without every single one of you.
- Let us all move on together to create yet another legacy for ourselves to look upon, years from now.
- Together, we will be strong.
- Together, we will achieve.
- Together, we will succeed.
Thank you.
Regards,
Jasen How

The origin of this blog is traced back to the era of which our secondary three members in the band were going through the NCO training programme. It was suggested in one of the meeting held among the NCOs, assigning Swee Han and Chun Heng with the task of management in the blog. And thus giving birth to the blog, gyss-bandd.blogspot.com, on the 15th October, 2007.
The function of this blog is to enable easeful communication between all members of the band – comments and opinions unable to express during normal band practices can be expressed here. However, band members are reminded to be sensitive and careful with speech in precaution of violation to other band members via derogatory, sarcastic or offensive remarks. Band members are advise to express themselves here on how they feel about practices, band, etc. This would ultimately allow better understanding of every individual in the band as well as forge cohesiveness and stronger bond amongst each other – one band, one sound.
